You’ve saved money for a down payment, you’ve toured countless amounts of homes, and you’ve finally signed the paperwork to purchase a new home. Congratulations! Now comes the fun (and sometimes challenging) part of being a new homeowner. Whether it’s cleaning gutters, tackling remodeling projects, or fixing little things that break over time through regular wear and tear, being a homeowner requires dedication and work. And when it comes to maintaining your roof, there are several important things to keep in mind. Here, we cover three important points that will help you keep your roof in great shape.
#1: Make sure to keep debris off your roof.
Living in the Pacific Northwest means there is plenty of rain and wind throughout the year. Be sure that you keep branches, leaves, and other loos debris off your roof so it doesn’t accumulate. On particularly wet days, be sure that you let the roof dry a bit before you climb up there to remove the debris, as roof material can be incredible slippery. In addition, be sure to keep your gutters and downspouts as free of debris as possible.
#2: Inspect your roof on a regular basis.
Your roof should be inspected often for missing or loose shingles, exposed nails, or any other problem spots that may need attention. If you notice curled shingles in various parts of the roof, it could mean that the roof is close to needed replacement. Also, check the inside of your attic as well as the ceilings in your home to be sure that there is no water leaking from the roof inside. This can cause mold to form and if it’s left unattended, it can be expensive and time consuming to fix.
#3: Keep moss off your roof.
Moss build up on your roof can cause damage over time. Head to your local home improvement store and purchase a top quality moss cleaner and let the solution do the work in killing the moss. You’ll need to apply it with a broom or wide brush, but never use power washers or bristled brushes, as this can cause the granules on the roof to wear away prematurely or could damage the shingles permanently.
