June is here, and summer will be here before you know it! Hot weather and longer days means more fun in the sun! Summer weatherization – especially weatherizing your windows – can be a great way to help keep you comfortable this summer. It can help increase energy efficiency, which could save money on your utility bill. Here are some tips on weatherizing your windows just in time for summer.

#1: Use fans and shades.
This is a simple way to save money and prepare for the summer heat. Use window coverings to keep the room dark and use fans to keep things cool inside. Be sure that the shades on the windows are kept closed during the sunniest and hottest parts of the day, so you can keep the temperatures inside balanced and cool.

#2: Caulk windows:
Leaking windows will allow hot air in and cold air-conditioned air outside. Even small cracks can cause significant leakage. Windows are one of the primary places that air is lost, so making sure everything is caulked properly around the seams is one way to make sure you can save air from leaking out.

#3: Don’t neglect window maintenance.
Home maintenance is an important part of keeping your home in tip top shape. Check your windows on a regular basis. Look for any chips or cracks, and make sure there are no issues with sealing. If you notice any issues, get on top of them right away and have them fixed, so you won’t have to budget for costly repairs or replacement earlier than is necessary.

#4: Replace windows.
Are the windows in your home cracked, old, and inefficient? We’re happy to provide free quotes on replacing your worn windows with windows that are energy efficient and insulated. Windows with glass made of high efficiency low-E coatings can decrease the amount of heat that is transferred through your windows and it will also help protect you and your family from ultraviolet rays.  We do not recommend that people add window tinting to help with UV protection or heat reduction, as these may cause excess heat to build up and could cause damage to the windows prematurely.
